The city's Magic 8-ball seems to say "outlook good" on a stadium deal between L.A. and developer AEG on the latter's July 31 deadline. The week has seen a steady stream of announcements coming out of AEG's quarters, from aslimmer bond requirement on the West Hall reconstruction to the announcement of architect Populous for the hall's new design. Despite some misgivings here and there -- blogdowntown reports one councilman questioned why AEG got to select the architect for a city property -- most seem inclined to see the deal as firming up. The OC Register reports that Jan Perry, chair of the city council's stadium committee, says they'll probably have a memo of understanding ready for AEG by their deadline, with a final deal to be hammered out by May of next year. Meanwhile, LA Timescolumnist Bill Plaschke says it's all very simple: "Do you like Staples Center? Do you like football? If both answers are yes — and for most people, they are — then you should support the tax-free idea that the folks who built Staples Center are going to build us a new stadium." 'Course, that City of Industry stadium could still muck things up for Farmers Field. -Andy J. Wang
